Father’s Day brings out the best kind of chaos, the kind that starts as a joke and ends with the truth. We’re going rapid fire on marriage and husbands, and somehow that turns into a full snapshot of how real families function: who’s the fun parent, who says yes, who plans nothing and still gets everyone there, and who turns every “silly activity” into a full-blown competition.

We get honest about how couples handle pressure too. Emergencies reveal a lot, from the partner who goes calm and steady to the one who jumps into action with a rapid-fire interrogation. Then we swap stories every parent will recognize: giving terrible directions, relying on landmarks that make no sense to anyone else, and that hilarious moment when a spouse can navigate you through a Vegas casino from another state. If you’ve ever printed MapQuest pages or watched a GPS “recalibrating” while you panic, you’ll feel seen.

The petty stuff makes the best stories, so yes, we talk thermostat control, power bills, and the household “thermostat officer” who keeps everything on lockdown. We also dig into modern communication, including long texts versus one-word replies and why a thumbs up reaction can feel weirdly insulting. Under all the jokes is the real point: the things that make us feel safe, and the lessons kids learn when dads consistently show up, especially in blended families and chosen-family situations.

If you laughed, cringed, or nodded along, subscribe for more, share this with your group chat, and leave a review so more people can find the Slightly Salty Edition. What’s your funniest dad or husband moment?

Father’s Day Rapid Fire Begins

Adrianne

All right. Welcome back to another episode. And with this being June and Father's Day month, we thought we'd have some fun with a rapid fire of marriage and husband edition.

Who’s The Fun Parent

Adrianne

So this should be a fun one. And what we're gonna start out with who is the fun parent?

Leanna

Jeff is definitely the fun. I will play in the pool with you, I will go play basketball with you, I will do all of that. I am the yes, we can go get ice cream. Yes, we can go to Target. Sure, buy that toy. So I think we're fun in different ways. He's fun in the more like honest way of being fun. I buy fun. Does that count?

Kerri Ann

No. No, I mean you you don't buy well, you mean because ice cream's involved in that? Yeah, and toys. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, I see what you're saying. Yeah. So Brian and I, it's very unique in our household because Brian is very competitive. And our daughters are very competitive. And our sons hang on for dear life. So when we do something, it will start off as silly fun, which I love. Like the Disneyland, the jump on this, the do that. What are they doing? Let's try it. And somehow it always ends up in something that is competitive. And it doesn't matter what it is. And they love it, and the boys have kind of leaned into it a little more. So I guess it depends on what the activity is and who you're talking to in our household. I'm I Brian will do stuff, but he's his comp it's just competitive. And I will do anything because I just have FOMO about everything. So I want everybody to try everything.

Adrianne

And I feel like in our house, it depends on the fun. If it is like when the kids were young, wanting to learn to drive, you know, when they were very young, Terry'd throw them in a car and they'd learn to drive. He did like all the football, whatever sport. Yeah. He was like game for that. Where I was the fun parent of like, you want to go, let's just hop on a plane and go somewhere, or let's go to California for a few days, or you know, last minute be like, let's just go at 11 o'clock at night, let's go look at lights. So I'm kind of the spontaneous fun of activities. But Terry's more of the fun. And you know, the boys, they would call Terry if they wanted to go to a party or do anything because Terry would be like, yes, where if you asked me, I would be the no, you know, person of like, no, we're not going there. Or no, you can't go to Tijuana. What are we thinking? Um, so they will call dad for that kind of fun, knowing that he would be like, sure, okay, I'll tell your mom later. So yeah, so we're kind of a mix of the fun of that stuff.

Handling Real Emergencies Calmly

Adrianne

All right, who's better in in a a real emergency? Okay, well, that's not fair.

Leanna

I'm married to a law police officer. If it weren't Jeff, we'd have a problem. But I am very good, like I will in the s few instances that there has been a true emergency, I'm very calm. I don't panic. I will get through it, and then after all is said and done, I'll you know what I mean? Then I think it kind of hits me. But yeah, obviously. If if there's any noise or any investigation or any type of emergency, that's his department. Hmm.

Kerri Ann

I have always thought I was really good in an emergency. Like I get calm and I I want to make sure everybody's good and figure out, you know, assess it and do whatever. But Brian's like MacIver. So I've I've kind of gone into this space where when something goes down, I just sit back and look at him and be like, what are we doing? So he's he's I wouldn't say he's calm, but he will whatever needs to be done, he will get done and address.

Adrianne

Nice. Yeah, I I feel like in our scenario, I'm like the 911 operator. So Terry's like ready to go and handle it, but he he'll be firing a hundred questions at me. So I have to know like what happened, what's going on, who did what. And so like I gotta know all of the, you know, so that we we stay calm. And so I feel like the two of us, like he will handle it, but I gotta be, I gotta know the information to be able to answer every question because he will rapid fire a thousand questions when you're like, hey, you know, the kid's got in a car wreck, and then all of a sudden he's like, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. And I'm like, well, this happened, this, this, like, I'm ready. I got you. I this and then I'll be like, I don't, that's all I know. And so we're we're just gonna show up. And uh, but yeah, so it's kind of a mix where but I can handle emergencies. I'm pretty calm. Sometimes I'm way too calm that afterwards I'm like, should they went to the hospital? Should we have done? Because I'm like, and it's in the middle of the night when I'm laying in bed and I'm like, should I go check it on? Do you think they had a concussion? Like, I'm not showing a little emotion. Should I have been a little more empathetic? That's awesome. Oh my gosh. We all should know about that. I mean, Terry will tell me where he's like, I think you need a little more empathy on that situation. I'm like, I got you. Okay, thank you.

Leanna

Jeff told me that the other night. He's like, you might want to have a little bit of empathy. He's like, why don't you run it by me? And then because I was like, did it, and he was like, no, try more. I was like, well, what about this? And he's like, no more. I was like, okay.

Kerri Ann

That sentence has never been uttered in our house. No. My husband's like, can you please pull back the empathy? Can you please do less empathy in every day?

Terrible Directions And Vegas Rescue

Adrianne

All right, who gives the worst directions?

unknown

Oh, yeah.

Leanna

Well, again, uh, you don't want me to give you directions anywhere. And yes, Jeff can. I'm gonna tell the story. So Adrienne and I are in Vegas going to see Mariah Carey. Literally, we're there for less than 24 hours. We are in a casino, cannot find the auditorium. There's all these signs that tell you where everything else is except the Dolby Theater. So we're looking, we can't figure it out. We're looking at a map that's making it worse. I literally called Jeff and I was like, hey, and he's at home in Arizona. I'm in Vegas. I'm gonna need you to pull up, find a friend. Can you tell me where I am? And he was like, What? I'm like, where am I? And this is where I need to go. He did. He was like, turn around. Do you see an escalator? Got us there, and he was like, look up, go right. Now stop. Do you see it? And we're like, okay, thanks. That was I cannot, I'll never forget that. And she was like, Why are you calling Jeff? I was like, he'll figure it out. Hold on. Sure enough. From another state. He totally did. I was like, hey, what are you doing? And I don't remember what he was doing. I was like, but I'm gonna need you to tell me where I am. He was like, what? We got there.

Kerri Ann

There you go.

unknown

Yeah.

Kerri Ann

You guys? This is north. Yep. This is south. This is east. This is west all the time. I if I didn't, I don't know how I got around before without my I don't, I honestly don't. I must have just stayed in one little bubble of life. I have the worst with directions and whatever. Brian can you can have him in a dark room, spin him around a hundred times, cover up anything in the world, and he'll tell you where something is. He just has that internal, amazing direction thing. And I do not. He'll call me sometimes because he'll see me on the phone and he'll be like, Where are you going? I'm like, leave me alone.

Leanna

I'm gonna get there the way I need to get there. Do you remember MapQuest where you'd print out like 18 pages of directions?

Kerri Ann

Or what about that stupid little Garmin maze? I couldn't even get that thing to work.

Adrianne

We had to Terry and I were doing a road trip once with the Garmin, and then we were in the middle of nowhere, and all of a sudden it was recalibrating, and I was like, we don't know where we're going. Guys, I didn't print out directions, and I don't know where we're going. Like it needs to, it needs to find its place. I will say on directions. Terry is good at directions. With me, he just knows if I tell you directions, there's two things. I'm always a mile off, one direction or the other. So you just know that go another mile or go less a mile because you're gonna get there. And I also give directions based on markers. So I can remember everything. Like there's a tree with three limbs, and there's like a homeless man on the corner, and this, and then you take a left and you'll be right there. And Terry will be like, What? And I'll say, Yes. Like if you see when you see the things, and then we'll be driving, I'll be like, see, right there's the homeless man. I told you he's always on this corner. And so that's kind of where he gets like it'll drive him crazy. And I even and friends now, when they call me and I give them directions, and then he'll be like, just not long ago a client, and they're like, I thought you said highway. And I was like, Oh no, I'm on rigs. I'm like, you should know by now a mile, one mile. Like, come back up. You know where I'll be. So that's kind of where how we do our directions. But Terry, Terry handles the directions. I don't handle directions at all for that.

Leanna

So I just keep thinking of how many things in our friendship you're in charge of that we find out repeatedly you're not good at. I mean, I know. Like with emergencies, you know what?

Adrianne

I put you all there in the end. Like that's all that matters. It doesn't have to be perfect. And you guys don't know, anyways, any different. We have no clue.

Kerri Ann

We're like, we'll sit there and wait for you to do it. Right. We're just like, we're just gonna sit, she'll do it. It'll be fine.

Adrianne

She'll figure it out.

Leanna

And now we're here, you know. Wait, what do you mean you're not good at directions? You're the one that takes us everywhere.

Adrianne

Yeah, just so one of my friends, she's hilarious because uh I will never forget taking. We went to Mexico, flew into Cancun for an event, and I don't print anything. I just I travel, I'm not the I just show up. And she's very like particular, but I coordinated it all. And we get there and she's like, Hey, what bus are we getting on? So, you know, we get off, the music's going, we're drinking. And I was like, I can't remember, like ex carte or whatever. And uh, there's four of them. And so we walk up and I'm like, hey, we need to get on this bus. And they're like, Okay, which resort? And I was like, this one. And they like, but there's four of them. And I was like, Oh, four. Okay. And then I had no phone service. I had, and she's sitting there panicking, and I was like, we'll figure it out. I'm like, if we get on the wrong bus, we'll just go to the next resort. Like it'll be fine. So, and we got to the right resort. Just want you all to know. I figure it out. Okay.

Who Thinks They’re Hilarious

Adrianne

Who thinks they're in the in your relationship between your husband and you who thinks they're hilarious?

Leanna

Oh Jeff thinks he's hilarious. It is the one thing I'm hilarious. I refuse to say that he's funny. He's like, everyone thinks I'm funny but you. And I was like, no. Because his head would explode if I told him he was funny. He makes me chuckle occasionally.

Kerri Ann

He makes you shake your head like this.

Leanna

All the time. He thinks he's hilarious. He laughs loud at himself. He's like, ha ha ha, that was so funny. I'm like, what? He's the king of the dad jokes, too. It's so bad. But I love him.

Kerri Ann

I think I'm sillier for sure. My my husband wants to be. He wants to laugh out loud and he wants to be. And you you will see him sometimes really, really enjoy something, but it isn't like when I enjoy something.

Adrianne

And Terry will be like, especially at night, if something makes me laugh and I can't stop. And then literally in bed, he'll be like, Are you done yet? And then it will just reset everything. And I'll be like, I am just hilarious. And he'll be like, You think you're so hilarious. And I'm like, I am. So we are hilarious together, though.

Kerri Ann

Because we just laugh at each other, you know.

Thermostat Control And Power Bills

Adrianne

All right. Um, who controls your thermostat?

Leanna

I don't get any of these answers. Jeff is the answer to every single one of these, and he's very particular because apparently SRP likes to charge us. We have the solar, and so we've got batteries, and he's like, It's 204. Why is the thermostat to this? And I'm like, What? I don't know. Because I was hot or I was cold, and he's like, You can do it at until 2 o'clock. Like, he's so meticulous with the electricity and the thermostat and the yeah.

Kerri Ann

Brian is in charge of it. So much so that now he has an app on his phone where he can control everything and he sees when anything has changed. Yes. Jeff gets an alert. Like he's like, who turns out times when in the middle of the night, when the heat goes off inside my body, I don't even care. And I will just walk out there and hit the button, and his phone goes ding. He's gotten better about it because we have new air conditioning units now.

Adrianne

So Terry is our thermostat officer, and everything's on lockdown. And he too used to watch the SRP lines and he'd be like, Why is it red? Why was it red today? Who had what on? And now he's busier, he's calmer on that. But I will never forget when I think it was cold. It might have been cold. No, maybe it was warm. But the basement, you know, had it doesn't heat and cool the same as the upstairs. But Joey was talking about being hot, and all I could remember was like, like on the on the Christmas Carol, when we're like, can I have some cold, please? Joey's literally up, like, could I have some air, please? And Terry literally puts it up one. And I was like, could he have two? Because it's on such lockdown of the air. Even on our Airbnbs, Terry will have it on lockdown. If someone asks, I think a guest came in when they're from you know the Midwest, they're not used to our heat, and they're like, Can we have it down to 68? And Terry will be like, 68. And he's like, that is ridiculous. No, you can't have 68. He's like, I'll give you 71.

Kerri Ann

So you can. Well, Brian's been known to open our SRP bill, and he'll be like, Do you see this? And I'm like, what? He's like, we use more electricity than 98% of the other people in our neighborhood. It's like this line in her up here. Like, I know, I'm sorry. I like mood lighting everywhere in the house.

Texting Styles And Thumb Reactions

Adrianne

All right, who sends the shortest text messages possible?

Leanna

Once again, I will send these long like all of these details for whatever it is. And he'll be like, okay.

Adrianne

Terry does the same. Okay. I'm like, okay, for which question? Yes. In my text messages. Yeah.

Kerri Ann

Oh no. I am with you guys. Yes. I also have heard that you that I lose you halfway through my text messages. So if you've seen lately, I'm being very choppy. Yes. Yes. So that I can actually get you guys to hear everything I'm saying. But with my husband, he's he loves text messages. And he sends me stories and all sorts of lovies and all sorts. And I will heart, I'll do a pink heart or a red heart or a kissy face or love you, love you, love you. Because he just loves to text. Oh, maybe you could talk to my husband.

Leanna

Honestly, I know this is off topic, sorry, but the thumbs up is the rudest thing I think for responses. If I text you a whole entire thing and you send me a thumbs up, I get mad. I'm like, what's wrong? He's like, nothing guy. Because I got a thumbs up. He's like, okay. Because you don't like me saying okay. Okay, but don't thumbs up. Thumbs up is worse than okay.

Kerri Ann

Yeah, thumbs up just kind of quick.

Adrianne

Now I feel bad because I thumbs up a lot of people. Because I read some, I feel like I'm just acknowledging, like, yep, I agree with you. And then I thumbs you up, you can't do it. I heard everything too. Oh goodness, that's so mushy. Like reading on that thing. No, you could have thumbs up. A thumbs up means I accepted you. I accepted your message. I do heart you guys. Yeah, that's true. Every once in a while you do do a thumbs up, and I'm like, oh, I was a little aggressive. Okay. Okay, I'm gonna have to retrain my phone to be like, instead of thumbs up, say sounds great. Absolutely amazing. With a couple exclamation points.

Grumpy Helpers Who Always Show

Adrianne

Okay, who acts annoyed but would do anything for the family? Oh, that's Jeff.

Leanna

He always looks grumpy. I'm always like, what's wrong? And he's like, nothing. Or yeah.

Kerri Ann

I think yeah, I'm not wrong with that one. Brian will. He he we have this thing where if it is not palatable to him, he will have a moment, walk away, and then start doing whatever needs to be done. But yes, it that's totally him.

Adrianne

I'd agree. Terry too. He will lose it for a minute, go off, be annoyed, and then he'll be like, where are they at? Or where we gotta go, or like he'll take care of it, but he's gotta first vent it. And I had to learn because and I would try to like counteract his venting, and then I'd make it worse, where he just needed a moment to say what he needed to say, and then move on. Where like I'm a fixer and I'm a positive fixer, and that sometimes annoys people when you're trying to like positively fix an issue, evidently.

What Makes Us Feel Safe

Adrianne

Okay, um what's something your husband does that makes you feel safe?

Leanna

Everything, everything about him makes me feel safe. Like I'm safe emotionally with him, physically, mentally, financially. Like he's just got me 100%.

Kerri Ann

I I always like my husband is MacGyver. Like, if something's broken, just give him some aluminum foil, a band-aid and a rubber band, and he's just made a grill. I don't know what he's done. But there's just really honestly, and we've talked about it because he's like, you know, I don't see too many young men that are like he was brought up to be, you know, like where you could fix anything and do anything and figure out anything. So yeah, he always I just know no matter what, he's got anything covered, needed, fixed, figured out, oversaw, whatever needs, whatever it needs, he will do it.

Adrianne

I'd have to say the same. I am a princess in our house. And I've just designated myself a princess. Like I go to bed, and Terry could come home from work and be like, Do you know the garage door is open, every light is on, and the back door is unlocked. I'll be like, Oh, is it? I just know he's gonna come home and it it's all magically gonna happen. Yeah. And I didn't have to get out of bed for that. Like, I just know I'm safe because he's just gonna handle it all. Like, I get in the car, I don't worry about where we're going or what we're doing. Like, he just handles it. So I drive him nuts with it because he's like, you know, you could lock a door, and I I mean, I could, but he just handles it all, I guess.

Kerri Ann

But you would be bored if I did that.

Adrianne

I'm like, wouldn't you be disappointed if I did like I took away a job? Like, why would why would I lock a door? So, so yeah, I feel like I just don't think about and like if we're out walking and he walks all of a sudden by the road. Like, I don't think about any, I just walk my little life and like cars can be flying by. I don't think anything, and all of a sudden he's like right there. And so again, any of that. He's just like I just walk, live my little bubble, and yeah, he handles it.

Lessons Kids Learn From Dad

Adrianne

Let's see. What's something your kids have learned from their dad that you that you love or you appreciate?

Leanna

So I think ours is a little bit different because Jeff came into the kids' life when they were 16 and 18 or 18, 17 and 19. But what they have learned from him, I think is what I think what Christians learned is what it means to show up for your family. And I think what Taylor has learned is what it looks like to be in a healthy relationship, what it looks like when a man leads, not controls, but genuinely leads, because I've seen both of their relationships take a really big turn, and both of them have always talked about it's important for me to find my person. The way Jeff looks at you is how I want my husband to look at me, or the way Jeff takes care of our family is how I want to take care of my family. You know what I mean? So they've learned I don't know. I don't know, I don't know how to what word that is. But maybe maybe they've learned what unconditional love looks like. Someone other than their mom, you know? So someone who didn't have to love them but chose to love them and chooses every day to love them.

Kerri Ann

So that's my answer. I love that. Well, Brian, I mean, I I always think of this story is that when we first got together, he took us camping, and we were not campers, and the boys were little, and so it's the boys and Brian and I, and he is MacGyvering this glamping thing with all like everything solar lights, everything is kitchen, all of it. And so I'm sitting there having my little drinky by the fire, and he's like, We need to cut wood for the fire. So he pulls out for my two little boys, he pulls out two brand new sharp ass hatchets and hands them to them. And they are just like, oh, like they have the biggest knives in the brains that they have ever had. They're gonna go with him and chop wood. And I almost wanted to just die. And I went to get up, and he's like, No, he's like, you stay right there. And so he took them off, and they were out there and chopping and chopping and dirty and sweaty, and they were having a ball. And he comes over and looks at me and he goes, and people may get offended by this, but this is what he said. He goes, Do you see their little balls are dropping right now? And I was like, Yeah. Because they were being boys, and he brought that comfort to them of, yes, I'm giving you these axes, I'm gonna teach you how to use it. We're gonna be guys together, we're gonna sh we're gonna cut the wood for mommy, and we're gonna have a fire, and we're gonna do all this stuff, and this is what you're gonna do in my bubble because I can control it, and you're gonna bounce around in it. And that's something he said always. He's like, you know, as a family, these are my boys, this is our family, girls, boys, everyone. We're gonna bounce around in this bubble together because it's protected. And in our family, that's what we do. We bounce around all of us, and we make mistakes and things get crazy. But at the end of the day, it's our protective bubble, and we're gonna learn from it, and then we go out in the world and do all the things we need to do. And I needed that, especially for them. And yeah, he that's just one story and a whole bunch of times where I've sat back and went, What are you doing? But you know, we he just has that way of just saying, When I love you, you're my persons, and I'm gonna kind of push you a little outside of your comfort zone because I want you to be the best that you can be.

Adrianne

Yeah. That's awesome. Yep. I think for Terry and our boys, I hope like that they've learned from him, like it doesn't matter what goes on in our life, like he shows up. And I think he's taught them like no matter what's going on, like you show up, air family, and we work it out and we figure it out. And I sometimes feel like my boys don't always appreciate what they might call lectures. But you know, like even the other day, like Terry was talking about their fine like 401ks and like, hey, yours matches, like you should be doing the, you know, like they're young, like he's like trying to get them like as they mature, just even like their simple finances and all of these things in life, but they're so lucky. I hope when they look back up, all the stuff they've put that poor man through, that he has always showed up for them and no matter what, been there, it doesn't matter what call they do, he's always on the phone or there to pick them up or answer a question. It doesn't matter. And I think that sometimes I think because we all are you know, obviously ours is a little different, but we're not blood. So a lot of ours with the you know, becoming they're not their blood, but they chose family. Yeah. And Terry is loyal to the core. And the boys, sometimes I think they miss that because they're just kids. And down the road, I think they'll realize like how much he really shows up for them. And all the sacrifices he's done for them over the years so that they could have the life that they had. And I think the older they get in working and realizing life, they're starting to understand, like, wow, this is expensive. And you know, how does this all work? What? There's just not food that shows up. And so I think on that part, yeah, that Terry's just hardcore to the loyal to them. And sometimes I have to text them and remind them and be like, you really need to thank your dad. Like, I feel like he just did above and beyond, and you need to realize that. And yeah, so I hope that as they and I think as they get older, I see it more and more for him that um, yeah, because that man could have ran if he wanted to.

Leanna

From all of us. I know. Jeff says sometimes he's like, Why didn't I? Like, I'm like, what happens? But no, I think as your boys get older, obviously, you know, like Christian has a baby now. Now that he's a dad, I think he sees everything that Jeff did in a totally different light. You know, the same thing. Like the first time he needed breaks, Christian's like, I need $500 for breaks. And Jeff's like, or we can go get them and I can show you how to do it. He did one, showed him how to do, you know. So Christian wasn't really thrilled with that. He was like, I don't want to do that, right? Like, mom just gives me money and somebody else does that, right? But now all of those little moments that I think were eye roll moments, or are you kidding me? Why do I have to do it this way? Now that he's looking at it through the lens of a dad, I think those lessons are hitting different, right? And so now he knows that that's the kind of dad he wants to be.

Adrianne

I love that. I feel like as our boys get older, things that they do I see with their girlfriends and their life or with their friends, I'm like, okay, they they're picking up, they are seeing it. Yeah, you know, and they watch. Yeah.

Kerri Ann

I tell Brian all the time, I'm like, you like it's funny. We'll sit at dinner and like they little boys, they just watch everything that he did and mimic everything that he did. I told you guys about Caden cutting Caitlin's hood. I think that's cute. Oh, don't do that. But dad does it for you.

Leanna

Do you know how every time I see Caden now, I think of that. And I try so hard not to say anything because I'm like, he's a grown-up and he doesn't want to be reminded of what his mom told me. But it's so sweet.

Kerri Ann

It is but you yeah, they watch. And then as they get older, you see them doing things that you're like, okay, that did land. Like you did pull that in. Yeah. And you are gonna add that to your life. Yeah.

I love that. Well, we're gonna do a shout out to all the dads, and if there's some great memory about your own father or something that your husband did, post it in our comments, and we'll see you next time.
